Hereford Guided Walks - Building Hereford Through the Ages
History & Culture
Free walks of the City of Hereford by the Hereford Guild of Guides starting from The Black & White House Museum, Hightown, Hereford, Herefordshire, HR1 2AA on Saturday 9th September 2023.
The Historic City of Hereford's varied architecture reflects its growth & development through the ages. The walks will take in the Norman, Medieval, Jacobean, Georgian and Victorian building styles and give a flavour of the city’s fascinating history.
As part of the Heritage Open Days weekend, the Hereford Guild of Guides will be undertaking two free walks at 11am and 2:30pm from the vicinity of the Black and White House Museum. Each walk will be limited to 15 participants. The walks will visit the Classical style Shire Hall and the Edwardian Baroque style Town Hall. Participants will see and hear the story of "The House That Moved" and the Norman marketplace with its burgage plots still visible. Passing through Church Street with its Georgian facades, the walk visit two examples of architectural recycling, the Bishop's Palace dating from the 12th century and finally view the Victorian Gothic City Museum with its extraordinary façade and a neoclassical church. The walks will not have time to enter any buildings but will indicate those buildings that can be visited separately.
The Hereford Guild of Guides was formed in 1981 as a non-profit making body to assist tourism in the City of Hereford. The guides have been accepted as the Hereford Mayor’s Official Guides and take daily walks of the city starting from Hereford Cathedral from 1st April to 31st October each year.
Come and chat to the Guild of Guides at their stand by the Black and White House Museum – on Saturday 9th September 2023 they will be there from 10am until 3pm.
