The Courtyard Writing Room present: Solo
Film & Theatre
Solo sets the bar for striking new work that leaves no stone unturned, as Writing Room members step into the spotlight with brave and revelatory solo pieces.
Award-winning director and filmmaker, Lisle Turner leads the Writing Room sessions. After the initial twelve-week
programme of writing sessions, Lisle was joined by Open Sky Theatre co-founder Claire Coaché, who has worked with a team of actors to bring the writers’ scripts to life.
“Learning alongside other writers has been a surprisingly useful experience.” says Writing Room member, Liz Bell,
“Not only do they tend to ask questions and raise points that help you to see what you’re learning in new ways, but the peer review process is also incredibly valuable, both in terms of receiving feedback on your own script and, crucially, in providing an insight into others’ creative processes.”
The Solo pieces are an eclectic mix of three-minute plays, ranging from a story of a mother’s visit to her daughter’s school as part of her trauma therapy, to a fleeting encounter between a female soldier and a stranger whilst on exercises in a field in North Germany.
The Writing Room is a collaboration between Feral Productions, Open Sky Theatre and The Courtyard, as
part of its adult participation programme.
When asked to describe her experience of The Writing Room, member Judy Woodfield said: “I have found The Courtyard Writing Room to be a supportive collective; a safe space to ask questions and test out ideas. A place where I’ve felt encouraged to learn and embrace genres outside my comfort zone and in doing so it has opened my mind and kicked my creativity into new territories.”
