We do not know all of what lies beneath our feet on Castle Green but we can tell you what we do know of this area. Today a very pleasant place to stroll alongside the River Wye or enjoy the views of the river and meadows beyond with a coffee from the beautiful Pavilion, Castle Green HR1 2NW

About Anglo Saxon Hereford

For 650 years after the Romans left Britain it was the Anglo Saxons who ruled much of the land. In the Kingdom of Mercia the small settlement of Hereford grew to become a key defensive outpost in the borderlands between England and Wales.

Today the city is one of only five sites in England to be designated an Area of Archaeological Importance (AAI).

This walk will explore why by identifying some of the still visible traces of Anglo Saxon Hereford and the histories they reveal of early Medieval Hereford.
