Hereford Cathedral

Hereford Cathedral, formally the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin and Saint Ethelbert the King in Hereford, is a Church of England cathedral in Hereford, England. It is the seat of the bishop of Hereford and the principal church of the diocese of Hereford. The cathedral is a grade 1 listed building.

A place of worship has existed on the site of the present building since the 8th century or earlier. The present building was begun in 1079. Substantial parts of the building date from both the Norman and the Gothic periods.

Shaping early medieval faith: The Hereford Gospels

Monday 30 March until Saturday 12 September 2026
Discover the inner life of the oldest manuscript at Hereford Cathedral, the Hereford Gospels.

Made circa 800AD, the Hereford Gospels symbolise the continuity of the community at Hereford Cathedral. Shaping Early Medieval Faith explores how the Gospels were created and used through the centuries. It shares the results of new scientific imaging which has revealed secrets hidden within the manuscript’s pages. Alongside the Gospels themselves are some of the oldest texts in the chained library, chosen to show what early medieval Christians might have been listening to or reading.

This exhibition was made possible with Art Fund support and the loans are supported by the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund.

Normal admission charges apply, and tickets can be booked in advance via the cathedral website or ticket desk in person or via the telephone (01432 374 202)

How on Earth was Jesus God?
Tuesday 23 June, 7 pm | Ludlow Mascall Centre
In this lecture The Revd Preb Dr Christopher Moore seeks to show how the Apostle Thomas, bare days after he had seen Jesus undergo the torturous execution of the cross, was able to face the risen Christ and exclaim: “My Lord and my God!”. How could a Jew in the first century accept that claim? How could someone who would assert that “the Lord is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4) come to believe that Jesus is that same Lord?

Tickets for this cost £12. You can book via cathedral website, in person or by calling the ticket desk (01432 374 202). Please note that this event will take place at the Ludlow Mascall Centre, Lower Galdeford, Ludlow, Shropshire, SY8 1RZ
