Blackfriars Ruins and Rose Garden

Outdoor Events

Located just off Widemarsh Street, Blackfriars Ruins and Rose Garden is one of Hereford’s most tranquil and historically rich spaces. The site is home to the remains of a 14th-century Dominican friary, once part of a thriving monastic community known as the Blackfriars.

Visitors can explore:

  • The surviving ruins of the friary, including parts of the cloister and church
  • A beautifully maintained rose garden, created in the 1960s and featuring over 30 varieties of roses
  • Peaceful pathways, benches, and interpretive signage that bring the site's history to life

The friary was originally founded in the 14th century by Sir John Daniel and played a key role in the religious and civic life of medieval Hereford. Though much of the original complex was lost during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the remaining structures and grounds offer a quiet, reflective space in the heart of the city.

Free to enter and open year-round, Blackfriars Ruins and Rose Garden is a perfect spot for locals, history enthusiasts, and visitors seeking a hidden gem just a short walk from Hereford city centre.
