A Stitch from History - Wonderful Woodcuts
Another chance to participate in a fascinating sewing workshop at Hereford Cathedral on Saturday 20 August 2022.
10:00 am, Saturday 20 August 2022
Once again experts from Hereford Cathedral will be helping keen needleworkers to learn new skills, and discover something about the past while doing so. Using images from the wide range of woodcuts in a fifteenth-century volume of the Dialogues of Creatures and Aesop’s Fables as inspiration, come along to stitch a dragon, an owl, a parrot, a peacock, or even the sun and moon.
Held in the beautiful College Hall at the Cathedral, the session will be led by Mary Roberts of the Cathedral Broderers, and Elizabeth Semper O’Keefe, Cathedral Archivist, who found the images in the Cathedral’s Library and realised that they would make great patterns for stitching. Elizabeth is enthusiastic: “This is a great way for the Cathedral to combine the skills of our embroidery and sewing experts, who look after the Cathedral’s fabric needs, and the historical resources of our Library and Archives. We are very much looking forward to sharing what we have with people who are keen to learn.”
The workshop, which will last until 1.00 pm, is suitable for all levels of experience. All threads, materials and tools will be provided, and participants need only bring scissors suitable for snipping threads.
