Get the inside slice about a brand-new Hereford business

At Hereford City Life, we’re always excited to see new businesses opening in the city centre and couldn’t wait to share an update with you about an exciting new food venture, The Broad Street Pizza Works, opening soon on Broad Street.

We sat down last Friday to talk with owner Nicola Hassenpflug, to discuss the vision behind The Broad Street Pizza Works and ask her a couple of questions about her plans for the old Ask restaurant.

You may recognise Nicola as the brains behind successful urban eatery, Sensory & Rye, so you’ll know she’s no stranger to creating great spaces and menus that showcase a passion for food and Herefordshire finest local produce. For this new restaurant, Nicola is going in a brand-new direction. Moving away from the urban styling and cool tones of Sensory & Rye, to create a vibrant Restaurant with retro-vibes, specialising in deep-pan sourdough pizzas, street food style extras and cocktails. Sounds amazing, right?

Hereford City Life: So how did the concept of The Broad Street Pizza Works come about?

Nicola: We kind-of stumbled across and then were given the opportunity to take over the former Ask restaurant. Sometimes in life you’re handed an amazing opportunity you didn’t quite expect, and you just can’t walk away from. Of course, it seems risky at the moment with all the Covid related uncertainties, but this is not just “a 6-month Project” but for many years to come, and the economy has got to keep turning. We are given the opportunity to support local producers, trades people and are able to employ local staff and we feel that this is vital at the moment.

We inherited this massive pizza oven from Ask restaurant, which ended up leading our concept – pizza is not necessarily the route I originally thought we’d go down but it made sense, especially with  Pizza Express and Ask both gone, so there clearly is a gap in the market.

HCL: A lot of people will be familiar with your style at Sensory & Rye, but what can we expect from Broad Street Pizza Works?

N: It’s a totally different concept to Sensory & Rye but still all about flavour. The Pizza Works is going to be a vibrant, lunch and dinner destination serving good, super tasty, proper food and drinks sourced locally, supporting Herefordshire’s finest producers.  It’ll be perfect for a quick lunch, dinner with friends, cocktails on a Friday night, a takeaway or delivery.  And of course, with a few more twists up our sleeve.

HCL: Finally, to get our mouths watering, can you tell us a bit more about your pizzas and the rest of your menu?

N: The Broad Street Pizza Works will offer an amazing selection of deep-pan sourdough Pizzas with toppings such as BBQ pulled pork, Pork Belly and Gherkins and Smokey Cheese, Garlic and Mushroom, in addition to the pizzas there will be Bao Buns, Mexican Carnitas, Fried chicken and other international dishes dreams are made of.  This can be washed down with a selection of local draft and bottle beers as well as some of the finest retro cocktails. To finish off there will be Skillet S’mores and hot Pretzel & Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough with Ice Cream, just to name a couple.

How delicious does that all sound? We’ll be following the journey of The Broad Street Pizza Works as it progresses and will hopefully be able to share more information with you soon!
