5 Things You Must Experience in the City

Mike Truelove, Operations Manager HBID - 4th November 2015

1. Visit the Old House in High Town

Rated as one of the ‘must do things’ for anyone coming to the City, and in the top ten Trip Adviser attractions for Herefordshire, this well preserved 17th Century timber-framed building will transform you straight back to its origins of 1621. Furnished in period style with English Oak furniture, you will find interesting pieces in every room. We recommend you look out for the rare wall-paintings, the four poster bed and the baby-walkers!

2. Explore Over 300 Shops

Probably one of the most common reasons visitors come to Hereford is for our shops! Pay a visit to the new £90 million Old Market shopping centre for big name brands, restaurants & cafes. Visit the historic centre for charming independent stores and larger well-known names whilst taking in the culture of the surrounding buildings. Take time to browse around Maylords shopping centre with its wide range of shops suitable for every taste. Finally, put your feet up in one of our many restaurants, pubs and cafes – you’ll find all the names you’d expect to see as well as sparkling hidden gems tucked away down side streets.

3. See Hereford Cathedral

You can’t come to Hereford and NOT see the Cathedral! Ours, in one form or another, has stood at this site since Saxon times and contains some of the finest examples of architecture excellence including the Romanesque nave, the beautifully restored Shrine of St Thomas of Hereford in the north transept, the ancient south transept and the award-winning twentieth-century New Library Building. And, once you’ve explored to your hearts content, why not indulge in some delicious home-made hot and cold meals or hand crafted cake?

4. Discover the Mappa Mundi & Chained Library Exhibitions

Our world famous Mappa Mundi is the largest surviving medieval map of the world and a unique and celebrated international treasure. It records how the scholars interpreted the world over 700 years ago and contains more than a thousand drawings and inscriptions, showing cities and towns, Biblical events, plants, animals, birds, strange creatures and monstrous races.

Whilst here you will also see The Chained Library contains 225 illuminated manuscripts with the earliest dating from the eighth century, and over 1.200 early printed books. The books are chained to the 17th century cases where they were housed and read.

5. Relax with a Great Film at the New Odeon Cinema

The Hereford Odeon is a new modern six screen cinema offering all the latest movies in luxurious comfortable surroundings. These days it isn’t just popcorn and soft drinks! You can expect to find a fully stocked cocktail bar, costa coffee, nachos and hotdogs, a wide range of gourmet ice creams – the list goes on! There is also Silver Cinema – a special club for the over 55s where tickets are from £3 and includes tea, coffee and biscuits to be enjoyed before your film starts.
