The 150 mm Challenge and The Measured Making Exhibition

Artist Blacksmith students at Hereford College of Arts were set a challenging project by lecturer Ambrose Burne to explore their creativity and the process of blacksmithing.  Students were given a piece of metal measuring 150mm x 20mm x 20mm and set the brief to explore what was possible using their technical expertise and creativity.

The results were exciting and students were encouraged to post their work on social media. This is where the real story began. Forged metal designers from around the world started to join in, making artefacts within the same constraints as the students and sharing images of their work. The exhibition displays a constellation of over 200 forged metal pieces from 18 different countries.
